Intermediate CSS Workshop (H152)

This class is presented in a workshop format. After a short review of some basics and coverage of a few new topics, the workshop focus is on real-world CSS issues and applications. Weeks one and two review some material from Intro to CSS (H151) and introduce some new material for application during the workshop. Weeks three through six focus on projects from the required text, Eric Meyer on CSS. Students may choose to create a new Web site for the workshop or may use an existing site to apply the concepts learned throughout the class. The final project requires the conversion of an existing Web page and the application of the concepts and techniques learned during the workshop. Valid CSS and (X)HTML markup are required throughout the entire class.

Week 1: Review and validation
  • Back to Basics - Validation and DOCTYPEs
  • Brush up on CSS validation
  • Solve CSS validation problems
  • Practice using different DOCTYPEs and rendering modes
Week 2: Specificity and Liquid Design
  • Specificity, Inheritance, and Liquid Design
  • Compute specificity and inheritance
  • Learn what liquid design is all about
  • Apply liquid design principles to (X)HTML markup using CSS
Week 3: Styling Hyperlinks
  • Styling Links and Menus
  • Learn the use and importance of link-related pseudo-classes
  • Practice styling both text and image hyperlinks on an (X)HTML Webpage/site
  • Create a menu for an (X)HTML Web page/site
Week 4: Print Stylesheets
  • Media-Specific Styles
  • Explore various media-specific styling techniques
  • Consider best approach to print-specific styles
  • Create a print stylesheet for your class Web site
Week 5: Multi-Column Layouts
  • Multi-Column Layouts
  • Learn various CSS methods for two- and three-column layouts
  • Apply a two- or three-column layout using CSS
Week 6: Converting old pages to CSS-based layouts
  • Final Project
  • Apply concepts learned throughout the course to a Web page
  • Select an existing Web page to apply what we have learned in the class. Convert the page using concepts learned during the class. Page must include: Valid (X)HTML and CSS, Consistent styles, Liquid design, Hyperlink and menu styles, Separate print styles, and Multicolumn layout
Prerequisites
H151, Introduction to CSS, or equivalent knowledge of CSS is a prerequisite for this course.
Requirements
Students must have webspace where they can post their assignments. Students will need to have at least two browsers installed on their computer. Current versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Safari, or Mozilla are recommended.
